In this segment of my case study, I continue describing the pay per click advertising campaign my Eastern Michigan University classmates and I developed for Dawn Farm. I detail the optimization strategies used to successfully bring Dawn Farm's online ad campaign on par with high performing commercial accounts.

As I indicated in my previous post, I had a unique classroom experience working with Google to develop a pay per click advertising campaign for Dawn Farm, a local non-profit organization.  I created actual online ads that connected people to Dawn Farm's website, and I was able to monitor the progress of my ads daily and develop successful optimization strategies.

My project's success came from learning how to identify the specific target market for each of my ads and creating ads that focused on what people in those target groups were searching for on the internet.   I learned that by using strong, catchy headlines and descriptive words in the ad text, I was able to make my ads stand out and grab my target audience's attention.  I also learned that by keeping my ads focused on a very specific product, my target audience was more likely to click on my ad and become potential customers.

As I learned to optimize my ads, the quality score of the ads increased.  This increase in quality score further improved ad visibility by causing the ads to be positioned at the top of the search page.  The project required a lot of work and attention to detail.  From my hard work came a lot of valuable knowledge and experience.  At the end of my experience, I was rewarded with the ultimate measure of success, my ads obtained a clickthrough rate comparable to that of a highly successful commercial ad.

Even though this program has been around since 2003 and has been the focus of many search blog posts, I felt that it deserves another round of recognition because it's extremely generous of Google. ---------- smithsan

Hello Marcell, I was happy to hear from someone that is from Eastern Michigan University since I am a student here at Eastern. I found your interview very interesting and insightful. I had always wondered how a company could tell how many hits it is getting on their website from a particular product or service. I think it is great that Google offers this feature to their users. This can be very beneficial, as your team found out. This allows you to see which ads or keywords are working for your company. If a company finds out that a keyword or ad isn’t getting any hits, then a company can dump the idea, so it doesn’t cost the business money. It can also help a company find out which products or services are the most beneficial. As you stated in the video monitoring this information daily is very crucial to a companies success. It tells you what the consumers are searching for, so if consumers aren’t searching for your keywords, then its important to make changes. One thing I learned from watching your interview is that a company should put their keywords in their ad headlines. Even though it seems like common sense, I hadn’t thought about that aspect before. It seems like it would make it more likely for to view your website, if you have what they are looking for in your headline. I also thought you made a good point, that the headline needs to be interesting. If its not interesting, then you wont hold the readers attention. And by putting the keywords in your headline keeps their attention because it is actually what they are looking for. I was wondering if other sites, such as Yahoo offer this same information to their website users? Thank you for your insightful interview, Autumn Darr.

Having visited Dawn Farm through another class I took at Eastern Michigan University, I can relate with Marcell on how important it is to get the information out there on the web that Dawn Farm is much more than a rehabilitation facility. It is family and animal friendly. Like Marcell said in her interview, it was very important to include words affiliated with "barns" in ads for Dawn Farm. Dawn Farm has a big community barn where activities are held and animals are taken care of as well. I think Marcell's 5 Optimization Strategies are a must to sell a business on the web. Using very descriptive and key words in ads that people would pull up through search engines such as Google is what sells the business. Having the Dawn Farm ads at the top of a search engine is a great accomplishment. From what I have learned about Search Engine Optimization Strategies is that competition is high in getting your business website at the top of search engine lists. Remembering the little things can really get you far when it comes to promoting your website; using less obvious key words and making sure words are spelled correctly are examples. Working with Google to develop a pay per click advertising campaign was a brilliant idea. Google is a highly reputable and successful company; having them behind Dawn Farm’s advertising assures that people will visit their site. Using the most popular search engine also ensures security and privacy. When people search in Google for Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor Area and Dawn Farm is on the first page of the search results, they know this facility is reputable and trustworthy. If a company was not legit, Google would have nothing to do with it.
Hello Marcell What attracted me to your video right away was that the location was Ypsilanti. I always find it interesting what kinds of ideas entrepreneurs are coming up with in the local area. I am not from this area so I had to do a little research about what Dawn Farms was. I also found out what a great organization to have in this area because not only is it a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, but there is a lot of focus on families and as well as the farm. I am also not as familiar with ad’s on Google or what it takes to get an ad on such a powerful search engine, but it seems like you and your team created such a great strategy that it was able to bring your vision to a reality. Your optimization strategy of using catchy, strong words in the headline seems like such a common sense thing when you think about, but I’m sure it’s a different feeling when you actually go to write one of these ads. I also believe that it is very important to focus on what the consumers’ needs are so then they will want to buy whatever it is that you are selling. In the case of Dawn Farms, you are really just trying to help the people who want help and are seeking some answers when they search online. You also bring up a good point about when making the titles; it’s not a good idea to cram each service they offer in one title. You need to keep the ad focused, which makes sense because when someone searches a rehabilitation center you want Dawn Farms to pop up. I also didn’t know that Google gave you a score based on your key words and that determines where your ad will be placed. This interview really opened up my eyes to many things I didn’t know previously and I wish you the best of luck. Kelly Taff

I was sort of confused when I was first listening to this interview because I was not exactly sure what this company had to offer, after listening to the whole interview I realized what a neat concept this really is. Very creative in fact. Everybody is looking for a way to make a buck go along way, so getting more bank for your buck is a good way of getting your customer rolled in, the click through rate is a good thing that technology invented because it gives the innovator a way to figure out who is interested in what kind of company and services that they could help them find. The click rate, on the advertisement is a way for them to get their name out on the internet. Impressions are there to help the advertisement companies see what people are looking for, the impressions sometimes are key. It surprised me of how many impressions one can get in one day, for instance up to 1000 to 2000 a day. If it is about drugs or alcohol 10000 to 20000. That’s a lot of people seeking helping about those topics. With in the advertisement I agree that it is very important to have such things to help the customer catch its eye. Like a very catchy and strong headliner. I know that I am one of those people who always look at the headline to see if I want to read that advertisement. My eyes land on the headline first and if it is not eye catching than I wont read it. We always say that you eat with your eyes first, the headliner is the food appearance of the advertisement. You need to grab that attention at first glance. Keys words are a great thing to incorporate with in the headliner. It is really true when you say you learn something new everyday. Today I learned about a quality score, I never knew that Google helps with the quality score and that it is what helps Google and other search engines to decide where to put the advertisement on the page.

This interview I found most interesting because it is discussed as anyone can do it and understand what the pay per click ideas means. Not only can big corporations include the pay per click idea to their cyber companies but also those who are just starting up like Marcell is. As stated in the case, it is important to optimize strategies, which can be accomplished by using strong catchy headline words, key words that stand out, focus descriptive words, and focusing on the consumer perspective and where they are coming from. I think because there are so many non-for-profit companies struggling now because of the decrease in economic success that these types of marketing ideas are what can allow a company to stay afloat and it is important for those how are interested on using ot internet to raise money to know. Getting the attention of the customer is the one part, but convincing them with the companies campaign adds to be your customer and want to give the money is the most important. I thought it was so interesting that the key words used on the Internet (ones that are clicked on) can help these companies like Dawn Farm identify if they are getting to the customer or not. This also goes with who they customers are and what they are looking for. Basing all your information on impressions gathered from key words seems quite risky when it comes to banking money on certain topics. I also thought that this interview really describes the power of Google within the cyber world of companies. The quality scores and other descriptions of what sites, keywords, and topics given can help make or break a company. Google has facilitated itself to not only become one of the most successful Internet corporations but also allow others to become successful through it. Marcell’s intelligence and ideas towards the power of Internet marketing is described to demonstrate the differences from all the changes and angles of Internet marketing. Trail and error being one of the main testing idea towards what is marketable and what is not, can not only be time consuming but risky. This interview demonstrates the possible risks and uncertainty that not only comes with marketing but especially with Internet marketing.
